"David, I know you like planes."

FACEBOOK:OLE FARTS FLYING FOREVER

***

You will find an eclectic history of my Toucan plane flying and/or mods plus repairs on my diary page. Day to day (sometimes weekly even monthly stuff appears on my "Grounded" BLOG). As stated on the diary page it will slow down as the current repair plus mods comes to its present conclusion. BTW when I have done some testing of new or rebuilt systems, that will appear in the diary and perhaps in the "Bravenet" forum; and where detailed reports merit a dedicated web (html page) within "Toucan2plus2.com"

***

There may be a few time outs re: "When is Dave going to fly?" because of life or higher responsibilites. We should not live to eat, rather eat to live. Live to fly sounds cool, but live and fly is more responsible in a fast changing life. Plus I am a young seventy. Every day is a gift.
***

I have a few flight plans beyond testing; however, I want to report on both after the fact. Hopefully new good reports are justa round the corner. Elliot Lake, April 2015.

JULY FOURTH - LIGHT THE FIREWORKS!

C-IHMB flew yesterday, July 4th, 2015 - YEAH & TG (:
That was her first flight since Dec. 2. 2012 : two and a half years of stretch.
Later I may write my quiet garage odessey, but my deepest gratitude
to all the hands who have helped me...
With out Hal Cummings it never could have been done.
Thanks Hal. (See his story in the webpages section on mentors).

MARCH 27, 2017
HEY ARNOLD WE ARE BACK

We have changed the location of the CHT thermo sensors
on the front engine.

width="425"

NOVEMBER 19, 2016!!
BACK TO THE FUTURE

How to do this its been so long...
I have a season of flying to report and a new mod to HMB (PHOTOS).
BUT...life is calling...
LATER.

HERE WE GO:
width="425"

We made changes to the landing gear in 2013 by adding "Black Max" brakes
not so much to get the fatter tires, like the other Toucan which was
flying off of turf, rather to get the better braking power to hold
the engines a full run up.
When the bang up of 2009 messed up the landing gear the old "Hagar"
system remained on one side and needed a mod to accept the new axles.
But it was tough to get a good alignment when not working with the
right hand main gear.
Now thanks to Bill, his hard work and enthusiasm, the left side is
tracking straight. Bonus, the left wing is not sagging four inches (:
***

The flying was been broken up by a long trip to British Columbia in
August and september.
Most flights were to sort things out and break my personal rust.
You can see a few videos at You Tube via the webpages...
one was down to Lake Huron, it was very hazy so Manitoulin Island was not
visible.
***
Almost all systems are now working very well, the front carbs, the EGTs are
much better and the two engines are working in concert.
There are a few items I want to improve, such as a better float
in my rear fuel tank site tube, etc.
I want to add some interior insulation for sound and heat and cosmetics.
***
Hopefully I can get some more video over Lake Huron with clear winter skies.

FREQUENCY CHATTER

Almost all of my chatter about "C-IHMB" has been on Facebook
with friends at "OFFF" (Old Pilots Flying Forever).
It's now an open forum for anybody.
We just celebrated "Canada Day" on July first.
In the past few weeks two sorties of Challengers
flew through here heading to Alberta for a fly-in.
The week previous a Lancair came through here on tour
and I was blessed to get a short flight with him -YEAH !
A little stick time, "Sure doesn't feel like 180 knots plus"
- just like being in a glider/sailplane - sweet.
***
"HMB" need some run ups on the rear engine, since it
has not had any full RPM static runs in 2015.
The new landing gear repairs and mods need testing,
as does connected rudder.

TRIAGE

Panic and dispair - JUNE 15 !!! We are rocking towards July.
Mind you it would be hard to tell with the SOGGY weather.
So these little updates go from left - right:
like my Sgt. Major saying "Huron,
you are out of step"(Brit calling me "Herron")(:
Life has a way of knocking us left and right and away
from a vector straight ahead.
*
Last week after the SMOKE came out of the starter area
within moments several shots came across my bow
on other fronts.
TRIAGE:
T=time-outs (trials)
R=resist
I=interuptions
A=aggrevations (age or bad karma)
G=get going again &/or guts
E="ETA" expected time of arrival (take off day)
*
Other people in urgent crisis and a bad butt vehicle
trying to strand me as I had to leave the airport.
So those situations triage higher than the plane.
How to work the plane back in with push but not
miss due dilligence.
My friend getting his plane to the waters edge and
preparing to fly.
Will he beat me into the air...
"Chill out Dave!"
What is the ETA, tell you after,eh.

PS his one does not work right as "right" (out of step)...

RETINA SCAN

FIRST. Starter is out, Starter works. Found the problem "Pogo."
Must change starter enclosure (sleep on it).

It took me four hours to get it out,Some stuff went on before the
windshield and engine.
Also the studs were a BEAST.
There is got to be a better way.*
Finally took off the starter housing and hacked my previous
work of art.
Retina Scan because I was too tired to get the password for here right.
* Peter would have loosened the motor and moved it forward: but with
all do respect _ I had just safety wired the exhaust and silicon coated the
springs at the knuckles...HUM dummy...could have taken it off at engine.
Oh well next time it will be a piece of cake.
Those side portal covers are wonderful.
Often people use the overworked line "its for a reason" Let's just say
it was a God-send I took the cowl off !!!
Near the end push slowly, eh.

SNAKES & LADDERS

Well for days it seemed the conclusion of two years works work would find joy in a flight.
I was very gratified to sort through the wiring harness and track the instruments
and probes for the first time to an absolute mental schematic (no manual yet).
I found my EGT problem is a bad gauge which was new from Oshkosh with less
than six months use. OK all gauges will be a go when I fix this one and it gives me
half the rear engine EGT...lets start the front engine again, then we can begin
putting all the final pieces together.

If you have been reading my comments on Facebook at "Old Flyers Fly Forever" OFFF" you
already know my new grief.
The front engine had started and run well on the weekend, this time no go AND smoke from
the starter area.
So the cowl must come off again and the starter must be taken out. Its in a very tough
spot and harder than the rear engine.
Onestep ahead and two steps back, "Snakes and Ladders"

MONSTER DAY

And the sun came out.
I have been working on cowl conflict - FIXED a few days ago.
TODAY:
I had a monster day at the airport - YEAH.
All bolts checked. And BONUS two little mods to wing gap seals
were to make replacing rear window easy
( Prolly not for 20 years (:
BUT to get at front spare bolts (a beast with gas tank in)
now is - A PIECE OF CAKE !
I made a mod to hold the EGT probe; works like a charm (:
Pulled apart the rear wiring harness to put in new CHT probe - THANKS Rick.
Just need to pull plug to install it.
Can pull out and start engines...
Gap cover remains off whilst I trouble shoot front tank gas gauge.

ROGER SKIPPER

Thanks to "Skip's" help today one major job done.
(New bushings in the lower strut rod-end bushings)
Plus he found a couple of loose bolts !@#$ THANK YOU (:
Major hitch, old cowl conflicts with new firewall and windshield...
enough that the cowl bolts on one side will not fit.

DREAMS

Have you ever tried running in a dream, and
it was like running in mud?
Yesterday I was getting excited with finishing
the firewall forward...
Here is my email to my friends:

"I bought heavy gas tubing and made small aluminum shield
to cover the primer where it passes near the exhaust pipe.
*Secured the ignition wiring.
*Ditto for enricher cables.
*Safety wired the exhaust springs and gear box fill bolts.
(I need to add high temp silicone to the springs.)
*The new radio mount works.

One more mod; do it better do it now.
Then I sat in the cockpit and measured my new radio mount spot.
OK lets take out the side consul to do work in the shop -- accept the wiring needs cutting - NOT !
Take off new side portal panel/door to access the front of the cockpit.
YES, there are terminals on the wiring. YEAH .
And YEAH for the port starboard panels (:
They were to be temporary. They are staying with some improvements.
Another tiny little ambush, not serious, BTW better on the ground and not in winter.

AIR SHOW 2014

My dear friend Hal asked if I was watching the last
"Airshow" program of the year. He said, you better get down there!
Pretty amazing stuff.
I watched Sean Tucker's mechanics take a kid's aerobatic kitplane
apart - piece by piece - for a safety check.
"What is this?" a CRACKED weld on a landing gear.
After the program my friend and I shared about where I have
seen that before!!
If it did not bite me when it did, it would BITE me,
perhaps at a worse moment.
Like the mechanic said, "If it breaks on take off that is one thing,
if it breaks on landing that is something else." Tell me about it.
Last night I finished Deighten's,"Goodbye Mickey Mouse"
WWII P-51 broke his gear on TO and did not survive.

TOUGHEST DAY AT AIRPORT EVER

My best buddy passed away suddenly on Saturday.
We buried him at my friend's farm on Sunday.
Frankly, I did not want to go back to the airport again,

ANGELS & DEMONS

I am regretfully bogged down in my TTD list.
My gun-ho attitude needs viagra.
Perhaps this is a good thing a God thing.
Like its not hard to "chill out" with all the ice
and snow.
In times past I have allowed attitude and bull-headed
get it done tude to negate patience and common sense.
(Hobby pilots have no mandate to fly other than passion.)
Like we are not "Wop May" saving a native village
or "Lindy" flying the mail.
I worked at a dangerous job and then later carried
one hundred souls trusting their lives to me - no
"sorry come back tomorrow".
So the BIG DATE of my bang up approaches on Dec. 2
The little stupid guy inside says you must beat that
date! Why? Screw the date and the pride.
I may not have ice water in my viens like my Dad or
good pilots, but it is a time to chill out.
That being said I will have a hard time waiting until
spring.
So when everything is done and checked twice,
three times maybe, perhaps I will do a low hop or two.

I ran into a snag today (more on that when its fixed -
hopefully without pulling engine. Hold my breath.)

Now for the TURNING POINT:
My close friend was ferrying his float plane to its winter
storage, a short trip. His plane ended upside down and
thank God he got out. It was traumatic for his wife

His plane is a right-off and restricts his future
flying. It hurts to lose a wingmate BTW we are
VERY HAPPY to have him with us.

THE GENTLEMEN DID START THEIR ENGINES

BTW in this case they flew - good on them.
Both Hal and Thomas flew off the Spanish River, which they live beside.
Thomas and Hal have been repairing and reinstalling Thomas' floats.
Notwithstanding the fact he has been building a house.
So he has his new bees up and running and his Challenger
buzzing the river too.
If you look at the "FLIKR" link abouve it will take you to site

SEPT 8, 2014

GENTLEMEN START YOUR ENGINES

Yes I heard my engines start the day before a visit with family.
What a sweet sound and they both started after 1.5 years.
There is more to that which I will report in the forum area of these Toucan webpages.
Suffice to say, due to my time constraints and the rain outside, they were just brief starts
in the hanger.
Its actually good to have pushed away from an obsessive-compulsive recent routine.
I have replaced flying thought with deep water fishing and the first successful fishing in years.
YUM YUM
Actually rather than dreaming of the perfect ten I did spend some time in my mind-cam designing
amphib mods for my floats - not anytime soon.
My hope is to get HMB up in the air before the colors arrive across our wonderful forests;
to replace the pictures I lost off of my hard-drive from 2011.
So I hope the next report includes a picture of the plane out in the hanger taxiway.
Until then cheers and GB.

PS The whole experience has been a rather wonderful time besides a daunting mountain.

Well progress is being made, piece by piece.
Today while talking to a supplier in the mid-west

they do not supply, since it's 1986 OEM.
That is why the pix below show a new diagonal support,
for the throttle slitter on front engine, because its
90% new - they do not make quadrants for twin engine
centerlines. So I grafted mine to the new cables etc.

My God where should I put my priorities? What is necessary

GRASS ROOTS

I have been reading about grass roots flying.
It stirred me enough to get my old flight sim stuff
out and running...Its not just turn key.
Accessories have needed tweaking.
I ordered a special module from Hong Kong
to make my old rudder peals work.
Just found a module from a flight schol that may make
slips more realistic.
I am the kind of guy that needs hands on and visuals.
I could hear the voices of Emily, Jamie, Tom, Pete...
"There is 800, make it a clean turn, fly the plane,
hold her off, etc.
I love to go replay and spot outside and zoom all around
looking at positioning etc.
Some friends like to fly heavies through the fog; I just
want to burn in visuals and look at the green grass.

It was showing "Buffalo Joe" flying in a "Snowbird's" jet;
the grin on his face was was wall to wall. I was really happy for him

DITTO happy for both of them in that venture (:

THE LONG WAY HOME

More reading about Pacific Ocean flying, updated now to 1941:
Ed Dover's, "The Long Way Home".
Flying "Pan Am's" large flying boat San Fransisco to the orient
and getting caught by Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, then having
stealth their way home across Asia and Africa.
One crew member got conscripted in LA area to just do the hop to Pearl,
"Sorry honey I will not be back in Frisco for diner, I will be back in
two days." Yeah right (:
It is fun reading about early trans-oceanic service.

FOOTNOTE to: THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN

For someone who loves flying books this is worth the effort.
However, when searching for the number of pages in book
I was SHOCKED at the costs of hardback versions
$145 new and over $45 used (YIKES) !!
Not many if any libraries these days will pay that for a niche book.
Now granted if it was Lindberg they would; BTW Kingsford is not as well
known, though it seems his flying was longer, and nore prolific than "Slims"*

If you do not have an ereader, it would be worth downloading as a PDF file
or putting free ereader on a laptop (there are tons of library ebooks available)
Just saying.

P.S. * Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Lindberg and that he survived the Atlantic was partly due to his courage and skill, built upon the early years on a farm... STAYING AWAKE to keep him and his horse ALIVE in sub-sub zero WX. IT was 9/10s a miracle too.

It is fun reading about early trans-oceanic service.

THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN

Charles Kingsford Smith and Those Magnificent Men
by: Peter Fitzsimons

I have been reading about the Australian Pilots who first flew across the Pacific just after Lindberg flew the Atlantic.
The story follows "Smitty" from his childhood, the trenches of WWI and then as a flying ace. The trials of flying in OZ where enough in themselves! Epic long distance hauls in pioneer fashion; their chance of survival was I dare say less than that of Canadian bush pilots.

The book gives background on early flight and many adventurers of that era.
It is much more than a simple biography (though I love that genre).[Written in the fashion of a Stephen King novel as you follow plots, trials, death and lovers]. I actually learned new information. Every nation thinks their heros are the first and best; well I say we owe a lot to the Aussies.

Kingsford was a real Errol Flynn guy - a brave and good pilot. Flying the Pacific in those days was daunting, but child's play compared to
getting plane, crew, and money together against all cynics, notwithstanding other "daredevils."

If you buy the book as an ereader its cheap and a lot of reading.

Even if you do not like reading, start with this...reminds me of some computer stuff we bought over 30 years ago - called:
"Batteries included" ! LAF

P.S. For those who do not have a Kindle or Kobo, try downloading an ereader for your PC.
Then try this site go Google:

NOV. 26, 2013

I KNOW THE FEELING

Don't ask me how long it has been since I flew.
If you have been dreaming of flying - not in a big bus,
save up if you can and find a good flight school.
At least hitch a ride in a small plane on a NICE day - EVEN IF
its just once.
I might advise going for a flight in a sailplane,
if its going to be a one of a lifetime - "bucket list".

...I remember getting taunts (perhaps well meaning)...
"When are you going to build a plane Dave?"
It was not easy, but it has been worth it; perhaps a story somewhere.
---Where is "Phil Martin" EX RCAF, Red Rocket & Mitchell Wing ?
PS I need to check out the local RC club flying in a gym for winter.

"LITTLE IS MUCH"

It got real toasty in the shop...
I think the radiant heater could have branded my butt (:
Anyway, we (royal) were able to make a few tweaks to the old cable guide and
new cable adjuster(I am using the old one as a guide and cable stop).
Hit one snag, the new eye-end hits on the rear rod-end nut...
more tweaking required.
This was not a repair required due to my incident but Hal's observation
that it was time to replace with a new one; except the new is not the same as
the old (:

WORKSHOP AND MATRIX

I spent a few hours in the workshop with "HMB" and
a hour with my old flight simulator.
In the first instance I need to tidy up and prepare some
fresh work. Hopefully some energy and sense of acomplishment
will come forth.
I have always appreciated the flt sim for analysis of approaches;
going outside the cockpit on replays aka RC to examine flare, position etc.
Of course there is not that seat of the pants, butt on the line feeling.
I think the flt sim will stimualte my desire and hunger for the real thing.
It was always useful in the past when months of WX made flying a field of dreams.

* Peter worked for AVRO, hence his hanger sign.
(If you are a Yank and never heard of
the "Arrow" you should look it up.)
Its kind of like Canada's "JFK"
Many of the high level NASA aerospace
engineers came from that project.
It is my belief the project was scuttled for that reason
not the BS put out by federal government(s) spin.
Or test pilots that never flew it.

WEST COAST TOUCAN

I am taking some liberty here to quote some personal notes.
For one thing it will take it away from Dave's naval gazing and
introduce some give and take (which I had hoped Yahoo would
provide. Perhaps I can figure out how to make a forum here...

...G.,
No we do not use the strut tanks aka Chinook.
But I am familiar with them from my time flying that machine,
hard to fill at -10 with 25 litre can (:
I had those check valves in may Lazair tank.
There were different thoughts on them...your advice is good.
I have thought that for a longer x-ctry flight a pair of those would add to my range;
help me out here, are they 2.5 gal or 5 gal each ( its been a few years).

My front and rear tanks hold 14.5 gallons; Peter's wing tanks hold 22 gal.
PS In the days (months ahead I will try to shoot photos of everything I can.

Hi Dave : Just looking at your diary ..do you have Chinook tanks on your struts ???
These units sometimes used a screened check-valve at tank pick-up point..
If there is noted gas varnish built up in tank ,,these check-valves can stop working
and stop gas flow..I use the screens but remove the check valve "ball"
to prevent them jamming from varnish or other debris ..Found out that MEK is
a great gas varnish remover !!! place a cupful or more as required, in tank
,,let stand a while ,,add a few handful of small rocks and
"swish hard and long " to remove the varnish ,wow..like new !
This item is worth passing along . Pic-ups in gas tanks are seldom looked at
as a source of trouble ,,new tanks can even have flies in them to block a line
,,read about a new plane and motor with trouble to no end for motor 's
intermittent working and stopping ,,only to find a fly was moving up and down
within the pick-up tube .,,happens .Then you look at the electric pump
as well ,,lol.

A PLANE FLEW OVER SHOP & ...

It was like a breathe of fresh air because,
>ALL< the pieces for the windshield and windows fell into place.
A minor executive decision again, leave old lexan on right side:
this will speed delivery to CYEL and expidite engine/prop testing.
With a minor mod to one rear window it will not be necessary to remove
right wing to replace lexan (which can be done even on a WARM cooler day
as the hanger has no doors).

After a few small things I will get ready to put "poly-fibre" skin on front
frame.
PS I forgot to post pix of new nose gear on plane.
I also need to post pix of banged up frame.

NOTE: request for frame measurements; better do firewall while I can get at it.

EXECUTIVE DECISION or GO ANTIQUE ?

First I had a small success, rebending the steel fuel line...
I do not have a tube bender, impatient to get it done I turned
to some bits and pieces to help make the bends.
"GO ANTIQUE?" Well I have a choice, sand panel down to no stain
and start over or let it have a used antique (1886) look?
In the beginning it looked pretty nice, but I tried to remove blemishes...
a downward spiral:)

I just got word that a friend lost a work colleauge ( one of the six killed).

Work on HMB has been slower. But there have been gains.

Better take a shot of conflict with lexan & engine mounts...
width="425"
If I cut Lexan back in corners it will allow removal of engine mounts
without removing winscreen (some poor guy in future)...
Cowling should still cover spot, BTW firewall leans over it.
I wonder if Peter did it the same on "HXJ"?

SEPT. 14, 2013

Did some work today on firewall. Thanks to my neighbour Bill
we got the metal installed after I used Brian,s brake to bend flanges.

BTW the round hold is dependent on the engine being mounted, its a tight critical fit.
I tried with templates and old firewall to get it as accurate as possible.

This afternoon I nearly had a meltdown mounting the instruments - don't ask how many hours Brian & I have

then I noticed moving the ALT should have been with chess eyes (GULP).

>>>BACK TO THE FUTURE<<<

NOVEMBER 30, 2011

Since my last post most of the daily trivia has been on the Yahoo Groups:
Toucan 2plus2
If I run into major epic chapters to write they will occur here. Today I was asked again if I had done any wing and plan documents? This time it came from another continent and a really warm friend who has designed a plane for his specific needs. When he has done that he would like to give the 2can a go. He says it was the 2can that brought us together(:
I have been held up recently by a small belt replacement. My friend who says he has rebuilt over 500 Rotaxs says he can do it in his sleep. After you have done a job once at least you know the routine. Darn I need a 503 manual!

JULY 5, 2011

Since the last post here I have had a number of flights (6 or 8). Most were practices circuits, landings, etc.
The last one resulted in a front engine out about 5 miles west of the airport; the plane flew home fine on one engine. We have flown the Toucans on one engine with two pilots. Just the same you prefere the experience by choice. The cause is not fully determined yet.
Modifications to the front cowling and air-flow may be a cause. Some parts have been changed that could have contributed to a lean mixture. If you read my comments at Yahoo Groups per page two link, you will see EGT was not a problem on previous flights since the mods... Some test flights may give further clues. One likes to know the cause of problems, pilot error or maintence. We are doing a new weight & balance in the next few days.

June 11, 2011

Ok this post is out of place, BTW if you are reading this for the first time the most current entry probably makes more sense. (So I should take the page and flip it upside down at some point)
My flying was stopped this winter by eye surgery, which trumped fun stuff.
Then we had to fix a situation in the hanger - which took much TOO long. But it works and makes things nicer. So life, time and WX hindered my flying...
When I pulled "HMB" out start up and preflight (and wash) I noticed damage to one wing surface from the bad storm we had in the winter. DOUBLE DRATS !! The LONG layoff built up frustration, fortunately by the grace of God I was able to wait for calm WX to shake off the rust. In the interm I fixed a flaperon trim tube and we are in the process of retro fitting the front engine cowl. See pix under "dave's Nest". Now we are in weird rainy WX. Patience is a virtue they say.drh ***

My world of flying is "up in the air" - in limbo; what about the "World" of flying? Do we have an other year of flying? These are very troubled times Mar 06, 2011

Mar 06, 2011

On BBC News I saw a guy in Nirobi Kenya building an airplane, the authorities may not allow him to fly it, it shows a lot of determination. It looks like a plane. The materials are very basic. If his weight is good and c of g maybe it will work.

My main computer bit the dust, its been a week of cobbling together parts here in the outpost. Maybe I can update the pages like I planned while in hibernation. drh

Jan 18, 2011

No time to update web info - shoveling snow for two days. And fixing computers. Who says you have more time for fun in the winter?

Dec 15, 2010

When I get back to my igloo I will do up some new info on the Toucans; they were built primarily as crop dusters for farms and the third world. High lift on low budget and small HP, low and slow... As a sport plane they are RAD. One of the demo planes did not have a primary design structural failure; rather, the inquest reported the strut material was not as stamped. More on that in the new year. drh

Just before the weekend I had a some gratifying flights, which included take offs, a touch and go and of course landings. "Any fool can take off its landing that is bread and butter." drh

Nov 12, 2010

I had some irritations with MB today - turned out they were minor; well minor on the ground. I was ready to role for a short circuit after the repair and I had a wee window before the WX came in... but my body and emotions said sit this one out.
Then I got home to find out a friend was airlifted from the airport with a heart attack while I was working there. It keeps things in perspective. drh

Nov 11, 2010

MB is ready to roll, rotate, take off/TO... Nice learning experience. A little glimpse at just one aspect of building this type of plane.

Nov 03, 2010

I had another nice flight yesterday, about an hour; a little bumpy and 8 K crosswind landing. I taxied to the hanger then all hell broke loose...
I had what seemed to be a very serious incident, some thought it was life threatening at first, then this morning the AME and a friend stumbled on my dumb ass accident, the plane fell backwards when fueling and so did I and the gasoline... I did not see the ladder bash the fabric and it did not show on walk around. A big chunk of skin blew off in flight, which I did not see until landing, it caused a huge issue to guys on the ground. People sight unseen were giving me fear of death advice which I am grateful for of course. This morning was a full return to confidence in the plane when we did preliminary skin tests. The problem is isolated and caused by the plane falling and hitting the ladder. " The guy that built it does good work.

Nov 01, 2010

24 minute flight, nice day. It was minus 6 Centigrade when I went o airport... flooded front engine, etc. I had trouble Saturday with rear engine - turn out to be wet filter from rain; Maj Claude Roy's report in Canadian COPA mag gave us a heads up for our problem. The other Toucan flying in Northern Ontario should be up tomorrow too and perhaps my buddy in his plane. drh

Oct 15, 2010

GROUNDED. I had engine problems yesterday, tried to catch some sweet air, but it changed as I fueled up. Then my rear engine decided to give power problems. Nothing changed since the last flight, other than I switched tanks and used some old fuel to run up. Need to check some things recommened by my mentors. Better on the ground than in the air...drh

Oct 11, 2010

We were away for almost a week. Canadian Thanks Giving day today.

Oct 04, 2010

Sunday morning I went flying with a friend - well not in formation. The rear engine RPMs are down to a safe level now and the EGTs are in the green as well. As a matter of fact I flew primarily with the rear. My fuel burn for about 1:20 + runup was around 20 liters. Quite a bit better than before. With both engines at idle she would not stall or even mush at 30 mph IAS. Working on forward slips. I have a few more test items, which I will report after they are done. drh

Oct 01, 2010

On my third attempt we got 5900 RPM - static on back engine.
The first attempt from last Friday deg & 1/2 showed diddly squat same 6800 - same static as before, go figure, not even a 100 RPM less.

Sep 20, 2010

I had a SWEET flight today about 50 minutes. Finally found a friends cabin on a lake (fabulous house actually). Gosh the plane lands gentle, like the old horse with the novice rider. drh

Sep 11, 2010

We were away in the Maritimes and New England states and I met four pilots all at different venues. Bonus I saw a real nice "Jodel" under construction!

Aug 08, 2010

Yesterday friend flew his Challenger II and I followed, to Massey and back. We did about 1.6 hrs flying. It was real sweet to see him swooping and turning down below. (spinning smiley)

I did a 1.4 hr flight this morning SE to Cutler then along the Spanish River to Massey, circled a couple of friends places and returned to CYEL. It was quite rough, beyond bumpy. I had my most challenging landing on returning. UNICOM and a 172 pilot tipped me off about the conditions. My invisible friend and the plane got me down gentle. drh

Jul 26, 2010

I did a 1.3 hr flight this morning down along the shore of Lake Huron's North Channel, then back around the town. It was very hazy. There was some traffic and I got to chat with a few young pilots which was real nice. Then I washed the bird and went home for lunch. drh

Jul 22, 2010

Did a short flight this am, about 25 min. I was heading to a friends place, BUT the clouds were below me and looking low and scuddy. I did a 180 back to the nest. Did some hands off while I checked a level for a refrence point in cruise re: some c of g bench marks we will do. This afternoon I installed a pair of avoidance lights on the struts and I may put a flasher unit on them...drh

Jul 17, 2010

Gosh with the little strut fuel tanks on "IHKY" aka "Chinook OEM tank (the green and yellow Toucan in pix above guest book) I could fly non stop to Ottawa. Or I could just draft the next Dash 8 that comes in here. ob

Jul 13, 2010

3 more flight since last post. 40 minute loop out to a friends lake and back. ob

4th test flight this morning trims to hands-off now. need more landing reps happy like a "Tigger" ob (spinning smiley)

Jul 07, 2010

engine problems, missed a great day for flying and a PERFECT night!

Homebuilt or Ultralight: New on the scene or visitor... Who is the pilot? What is the plane flying over Elliot Lake at 21:10; yellow with blue wing tips? If he is local his ETA has to be Espanola or Iron Bridge (or a private strip)??? Why did I not have my binoculars and a radio!

We discovered my problem with pitch trim (flaperon reflex) and it was in part my bad deduction; however, there is a mechanical connection that will need attention sooner or later. It could be somewhat invasive fun. drh PS Next flight will determine how necessary immediate attention is needed.

Jul 02, 2010

I flew HMB for 1:15 min this morning. Working with engine management, general pilot and plane getting more. acquainted.

Jul 01, 2010

I flew HMB today for about 45 minutes second solo flight in this machine. More comfortable, she is nice handling. It was a bit x-wind gusty on landing. EGT high on one engine which needs another pitch tweak. (spinning smiley)

Jun 28, 2010

I had some medical attention today, they say no flying for 24 hours. WX: maybe the winds and bod will find a converging point. ob

Jun 17, 2010

Life has hindered kyte time. Stuff like controls to tweek, the inner steam is building. Which means what OB? Flying time needed.

Jun 8, 2010

I just had a flight, one up in my Toucan. So now I has the privilege of flying two Toucans drh

May 25, 2010

This week I have traded a stick for a shovel. I hope to reverse the process next week. drh

I had the very special privilege of flying with Pete in his Toucan.

May 11, 2010

I ran into a snag trying to change the tires on my main landing gear. Difficult frozen bolts behind the brake disc (on wheel at least). Hopefully our treatment of penetrating oil will do the trick. drh (bite icon)

May 10, 2010

Finally, we got the RPMs into a reasonable envelope. They may be a tad low on one engine, though we expect the rear engine to unload some when it is in the slipstream of the front engine. Pretty freaky when a plastic grocery store bag gets sucked up off the hanger floor and shreads thru the prop.

< May 10, 2010

I hope to go flying in sister plane to mine. May 06, 2010

Good news, I wasn't so cheap this time and put more fuel in; hum, the gas gauge does work! However, RPMs still too high static on one engine (props do not load up as much at back). So after I consult with prop manufacture probably add even more pitch. EGT & CHT gauges not working on rear, since its two gauges suspect wiring problem in harness or dash... Too windy to taxi.

May 05, 2010

Changed pitch again. Started run-up test... ran out of gas. the dog & I were hungry so we went home, then did a walk in the park.(greeen tounge out smiley)

May 04, 2010

A Rotax mechanic & 5 X plane builder came and helped me get stuff better towards rotation. Close may work in horseshoes, but hitting the target is essential.

drh Apr 29, 2010

OK each engine ran. But the prop pitches seem too fine on the rear and too course on the front. Too bad I did not get it right the first time. My rear engine gauges are not working, nor is one fuel tank gauge. Stuff to tweak. Today was a perfect day for flying. Fortunately my neighbour got in some flying.

Apr 05, 2010

Can you hear the engines running? The "Beach Boys" used to sing, "I'm getting good vibrations"...(spinning smiley)

Took the props off last week and took them to a shop for setting pitch angle. Put props back on this morning and torqued up the front.
Little snag with tracking outside the parameters...

Mar 12, 2010

Front props installed today. They still need to be set to correct angle for testing...

Feb 08, 2010

I just came across a post of a fellow wanting to develop a twin inline, howbeit a faster version, more like the "Powers/Bashforth" ob
