PETER BONELL:

Peter found two Toucans restored them and put them back into the air, in 1998 and 2008 respectively.

Thank you Peter !

[Pete had his first flights of the year a few days ago, about May 1, 2015.]
[We need to get him a "Go Pro."]

[May 15, 2015. I just had the privilege of flying Peter's "HXJ" for two days. What a well detailed machine!
He keeps everything top shelf like his BMW road machine (:]

Peter Bonell of North Bay was one of the first two Canadian "registered" ultralight flight instructors.
He also holds a private pilot license. He is now located south of the Bay in Powassan and flies out of CPE6,
Almaguin Highlands Airpark (Formerly South River/Sundridge)
He has flown Lazairs and Toucans, summer and winter off land and water. And flying Lazairs at minus 20 something in winter is an event for tough gutsy guys who love flying.
He also owned a Pelican on floats, but then he found one of the Toucans that he had previously sold as a dealer.
Because the Toucan performance was much more to his satisfaction it became his plane of choice.
Peter then found and bought back a second Toucan which he restored and put back into the sky (2008).
(Now"C-IHXJ" which he refers to as his "KITE".)
He restored "HMB" in 1998 and sold it in 2008.
"HXJ" has identical power to "HMB" which was his first one, but now has Warp drive props prop, while the latter had wooden props.

He has made convenient changes to the structure, but nothing of note to the aerodynamic design.

This most recent version has the wing attach point OUTSIDE the twin booms, which leaves a 6'permanent center section. This permits less disassembly for quicker storage or transport. Plus he made wingtanks left and right (22 gal total). This compares to "HMB" which has a tank overhead between the wings and one behind the rear pilot seat
With the fuel tank change and a slight change at the back of the fuselage "HXJ" gives the rear pilot more "stretch" room. He also made a rear door.
Note (March 2010): [His tail booms are slightly longer.]

The first restoration has Junker ailerons (the ailerons flex 5 deg for trim); "HXJ" has the same design ailerons,
with the addition of FLAPS and elevtor trim.

Peter served in the RCAF in Germany, then he worked in the Avro Arrow program, hence "Arrow" heritage decals on "HXJ".
Two rare planes, but there are a few more Toucans flying, even if a ghost Arrow is off dream flying someplace.
He reports that the Toucan is a very sweet plane to fly, with a steady C of G, great control in turns and very little pitch sensitivity.
The cabin width is nice compared to a Challenger or Piper Cub.
